Ravenswood is a historic 40-acre estate in Livermore designated as a landmark and operated as a wedding and event venue.
Ravenswood, located at 2647 Arroyo Road in Livermore, is owned and operated by the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District (LARPD). The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a State of California Historical Point of Interest and City of Livermore Historic Preservation Landmark Site.
A 19th-century entertainment estate
The estate was originally purchased by Christopher A. Buckley, known as the "Blind Boss" of San Francisco. Buckley designed the estate as an entertainment venue for his political associates and contacts. The main structure contained a single bedroom intended for servant quarters, while a separate "Bedroom House" provided accommodations for the Buckley family and guests. The grounds originally encompassed roughly 100 acres planted with wine grape varieties including French Colombard, Folle Blanche, Gran Noir, Carignane, Sauvignon Vert, and Petite Sirah.
The estate later passed to a German Catholic religious order before being acquired by developer Masud Mehran, who donated part of the property to the City of Livermore in 1971. The Livermore Heritage Guild, founded in 1973, contributed research, advice, and advocacy that helped save Ravenswood and secure its local historic designation. The Guild's efforts ensured that this significant property would be preserved for public access and enjoyment rather than lost to development.
A modern event destination
Today Ravenswood sits on 40 acres and is described by LARPD as its "signature wedding and special event location". On-site features include a gazebo, rose garden, and working vineyards. The historic setting and manicured grounds make it a sought-after venue for celebrations and formal occasions. Public docent-led tours are held on the second and fourth Sunday of each month (except the fourth Sunday in December), from noon to 4 PM.
The site hosts two recurring community events: an Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social in August and a Victorian Yuletide celebration in December. These traditions connect modern visitors to the estate's heritage and offer opportunities to experience Livermore's history firsthand. LARPD's office hours for booking and inquiries are Monday–Thursday 8:30 AM–6 PM and Friday 8:30 AM–5 PM.
Insurance connection: Earthquake insurance
California earthquake insurance is offered through the California Earthquake Authority (CEA), which provides deductible options of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%. Homes valued over $1 million or older homes without seismic retrofitting require a minimum 15% deductible. Insurance companies must offer earthquake coverage in writing every other year; customers have 30 days to accept before the offer is considered rejected. Basic personal-property coverage starts at $5,000 and can be increased to a maximum of $25,000. Additional living expense coverage ranges from $1,500 to $100,000.
